Though messier and less layered than the best of Bleach, this set does boil the series down to what it does best: fighting, fighting and more fighting. Hueco Mundo is a hornets' nest of enemies, and with the Espada finally entering the picture, this set is one giant run of painful, impossible fights. Enemies fall, allies fall, and the rescue of Orihime reaches its (first) crisis: it's as close as the Hueco Mundo arc gets to a payoff before being cut short by the inevitable filler arc.

Of course, the show does its best to bog things down anyway. It begins with the beginning of each episode, which thanks to the lengthy recaps tacked in front, can be as far as five or six minutes into a twenty-three minute episode. And then there's all the running. Even at this juncture people are still running down long, long corridors and worrying for long, long periods about their comrades. When not recapping or running, the characters are taking part in forced comic relief, which always drags on too long and with far too few laughs, or fighting fights that we really don't give a crap about. No fight is so important or exciting that it can't be intercut with a couple of ditchwater-dull wastes of time. Renji and Ishida's fight with Szayelaporro is probably the biggest breadcrumb in the Bleach meatloaf; big enough that its repeated use makes you start to wonder if the show is more loaf than meat.

And then you hit the meat. The conclusion of Chad and Ishida's Privaron Espada fights don't count, not because they aren't cool—Chad's in particular has some neat power-ups—but because they're of little import. The first real blood is drawn by Rukia, whose fight with Aaroniero reopens some old wounds and proves that the show still has the spine to act with deadly finality. Its conclusion also gives us our first glimpse of the rest of the Espada. Later a brief clash with another Espada gives some idea of how very far beyond team Ichigo the top tier of arrancars is, dealing out shocking defeat along with the usual coolness. The endless Szayelaporro fight even has its moments, when the elements line up right and Ishida's cerebral fighting style gets our blood up.

The set's centerpiece, however, is Ichigo's rematch with Grimmjow. The lead-up even manages to wake the series' plotting skills from hibernation. A rift opens in the Espada, the enemies' clashing goals start to work in Orihime's favor, and for the first time in ages the show is actually suspenseful, with Orihime left first to the mercies of two jealous arrancars and then to the self-serving machinations of Grimmjow. A little finagling later and the pieces are all in place, the opponents lined up and all interlopers eliminated (for the time being). At which point Bleach gets down to the business of kicking serious butt.

Like any good fight, the Grimmjow fight has its layers: Ichigo facing down his bloodier instincts, Grimmjow revealing the source of his obsession, Orihime coming to terms with what Ichigo has become in his pursuit of power. And like any good fight its appeal is ultimately very simple: the sight of two guys throwing everything they have at each other until one of them runs out. There is nothing held back here: no restrictions, no doubts—nothing but Ichigo and Grimmjow rocketing to the limits of their power. The thrill is primal and visceral—pure reptile brain. It's catharsis of a very potent sort, fuelled by all of those episodes that Ichigo spent worrying and training and stagnating. It's hard to argue with Grimmjow when he implies that Ichigo is only really alive when he's fighting.

The same could be said of Noriyuki Abe and his animators. The piddling fights are pretty cheap looking and you can tell that no one's putting their hearts into the comic interludes. The series' usually infallible eye for cool abandons it for large stretches of the Szayelaporro fight and while Hueco Mundo's architecture is pretty plain to begin with, it gets downright dull when there's a lot of running and wasting time to do. When there's real fighting to be had, though, Abe and his crew almost immediately catch fire. There are images in Rukia's fight, particularly once Aaroniero reveals his nauseating true form, that will stick with you whether you like it or not. You can practically taste the pride Abe and his team take in the Grimmjow fight, with its acrobatic showboating and heavy-hitting bursts of full animation. The clash of bodies and the rearrangement of landscapes haven't been so lovingly rendered since probably the height of the Rescue arc. Grimmjow, for his part, remains a paragon of manly sex appeal—even when he's transformed into a pseudo-mechanical humanoid panther-thing.

Shiro Sagisu's score does menace exceedingly well and comedy with a reasonable measure of competence, but like everything else this volume it really shines when it gets violent. The mix of symphonic muscle and guitar noise during the Grimmjow fight is as wild and free as the fight itself. Countering that is Rukia's episode, during which the dreaded sad piano returns, weighing everything down with ponderous lumps of musical cheese.

That particular episode is also the weakest link in Viz's otherwise fine dub, though only because it renders moot the dub's greatest weapon: namely Michelle Ruff's emotionally adept Rukia. As per usual the dub is well-scripted and well-acted, with the usual liberties taken with the comic content. Which still stinks regardless. Viz's effort here continues to be one of the very best for matching the original point-for-point. The notable exception is Nel, and that's a good thing as the difference mostly involves the removal of annoying vocal quirks.

If you're wondering where the usual omake went, they've been shaved off of the episodes proper and collected in the extras menu.

This may be as perfectly balanced a mixture of grade-A excitement and prime-cut frustration as you'll ever find. Watching the Szayelaporro fight intrude into the build-up to the Grimmjow fight is like some exquisitely crafted form of torture. Still, the torture is worth it for that last, three-episode bonanza of blood and destruction. There's nothing like going out on a high note. Now bring on the filler.

Aizen has a sword that screws with people's heads and a stone that creates arrancars, but his real superpower is the dick move. His ability to find and follow the most bastardly course of action is so inhumanly well-developed that it deserves nothing less than superpower status. He's definitely not someone you invite to a party. He does, however, make for great TV. Take his emotional brutalization Hinamori back during the Rescue Arc. Or his callous use of Rukia to get at the Hogyoku. This set finds the king of slime back in peak condition, which naturally means it has some killer content.

Unfortunately you have to navigate a disc's worth of tedious filler to get at it. That's four episodes for those unfamiliar with Viz's per-disc episode counts. The first is probably the worst, a corny affair during which Soul Society's two biggest bumblers team with its biggest narcissist to help a dead baker reconnect with his living mother. The final two, both part of the same story, are a close second. Aizen gets in some minor douchebaggery to foreshadow things to come, but it only leads to a couple of underpowered fights designed mostly to keep animal mascots Lirin, Kurodo, and Noba in rotation. Renji and his eyebrows do get some welcome screen time, but they deserve a better platform than a couple of dully-animated Hollow-slayings. The disc's other episode has Kon possessing a girl's stuffed dog and awkwardly healing her lonely heart. It sounds about as fun as blinding yourself with chopsticks but turns out, contrary to all logic, to be pretty good. It's nice to see the comic relief get a story with a little meat on it, and if that isn't your thing, there's always the sight of Kon-as-adorable-stuffed-dog going Jet Li on a Hollow.

Even so, it isn't an easy disc to get through. So when Grimmjow and company are sent by Aizen to wreak some havoc in Karakura Town, the relief is palpable. And we aren't the only ones feeling it. Released from the interminable training, the animators tear into the Espada action as if starved for worthy content. They almost immediately regain their eye for uber-cool poses and neato power-ups, and spike each fight with jolts of violence so beautifully executed (they give Grimmjow the world's most awesome flying kick) that it's hard to believe that they're the same guys who were sleepwalking through Renji's rinse-and-repeat fight just episodes previous. It's easy to get caught up their enthusiasm. The show is, for a while at least, the rock 'em, sock 'em shonen action machine it was before runs of filler and mopey soul-searching robbed it of its energy. Blood is spilled, new powers are tested, and enough testosterone leaks from Grimmjow to give a football team incurable man-crushes.

And then Aizen makes his move. Or more accurately, his move is revealed. It unfortunately cuts the fights short, leaving them inconclusive and unsatisfying (though still more satisfying than the throwaway filler fights and excuses for emo agonizing of the past few sets), but it definitely has its compensations. For the sake of those who haven't seen these episodes already (both...no, all three of you), I won't say what it is. Suffice to say it leads to one of the handful of episodes in which Bleach tries to play on our softer emotions and actually succeeds. It's an excellent episode, perhaps one of the series' best—a deeply sad and equally touching parting of characters' ways that makes explicit the previously implied feelings of a crucial player in Ichigo's life. Nearly as important, it, like the best of Aizen's dick moves, punts the plot in an entirely different direction than it was heading. That the direction it punts it in is a Rescue-Arc-styled invasion of Hueco Mundo (the world of the Hollows) isn't exactly heartening, and neither are the small fry that are fought there, but it does get the series moving in earnest again and at least now we don't have to worry about keeping all of those repetitive attacks on Karakura Town straight.

Plus, Hueco Mundo gives the series an excuse to indulge its love of atmosphere again. The black and white wasteland of the surface world, with its starless skies and dead crystal trees, is a particularly inspired creation, and coupled with the series' dissonant score puts some of the menace back in its style.

After nearly a 150 episodes there isn't much new to say about Viz's dub. It has become something, like the sharp character designs, rock-guitar-meets-mariachi-band score, dumb yet somehow funny humor, gorgeous minimalist packaging, dearth of meaningful extras, Orihime's eyeball-melting cuteness, or that particular bit of piano they always break out for the weepy bits (which actually works well this time) that we just take for granted. And this set doesn't add much new to it: if you liked it before, you will now; if you didn't, you won't. It does bear noting that Stephanie Sheh acquits herself well as Orihime, though not as well as Yuki Matsuoka, and that the rest of the cast handles the increased intensity with skill.

Set eight is a transitional set, marking the final shift from the filler-plagued Karakura Town arc to the action-packed, if flawed, Hueco Mundo arc. There are great episodes to be had here, and good fights, as well as further proof that Aizen MUST DIE, but it is a very uneven collection of material, both in tone and in quality. It is best taken as a necessary stepping stone on the way to the good stuff, or as dressing for the single superb episode at its center, not as straight entertainment.

It's been said by a certain manga observer that the defining feature of the greatest Shonen Jump titles is combat with swords. And at first glance, it would seem that Bleach follows this principle, with spirit blades known as zanpakutou and an intricate leveling-up system of shikai and bankai. Yet as this volume shows, some of the series' best moments come not from the clash of sharp-edged steel, but what happens when that steel transcends its form. For who could have expected mind control, deadly cherry blossoms, hidden poisons, and a perception-altering drug to be the keys to victory or defeat in this story arc? Perhaps the secret to Shonen Jump success isn't stuff that involves swords. It's stuff that goes beyond swords.

The unleashing of Tite Kubo's imagination is not without its missteps, however: the Ichigo/Nel/Nnoitora fight scene in the early chapters fizzles out rather than achieving a dramatic climax, and only Kenpachi's arrival stops it from being a complete flop. It's almost as if Kubo threw his hands up and said, "That's it, I can't write my way out of this one, might as well bring in the captains!" To his credit, though, the gambit works: the story arc had become hopelessly fractured due to Ichigo and his friends splitting up, and having Soul Society's enforcers come in to help corral them back together is preferable to watching everyone wander off in five different directions.

The fractured, muddled plotting of the early chapters eventually settles down in the middle third of this volume, with Byakuya taking on the mystic Zommari in a fight that is almost surreal. It's a thrilling battle of mind over matter—Zommari shows off his mind-control abilities, only to be outdone by Byakuya's superior willpower and critical-thinking skills—and it certainly doesn't hurt that Byakuya is a man of high principles who has some chilling, powerful words for his opponent. The other major fight in this book, a battle of wits between the brightest scientific minds of Soul Society and Hueco Mundo, is another swordless affair—but this time practically comical in nature. There's a certain ridiculousness in watching Mayuri and Szayel go back and forth shouting "Actually, I was planning ahead for that!" with their deceptive tactics (usually involving mad forms of biochemistry), but when Mayuri finally gains the upper hand, he sets up an wonderfully jaw-dropping conclusion to this volume. And he does it without ever wielding a blade.

With these strange spirit attacks that border on outright magic, it's no surprise that Kubo's art also enters the realm of stylization and abstraction—after all, the laws of the real world already went out the window early on in the series. Obviously, the more outlandish the attack, the more striking it looks on the page: the middle battle of this volume takes the crown for aesthetics with Zommari's voodoo-like transformation and Byakuya releasing his thousand cherry blossoms, arguably the most elegant bankai of all the major characters. Kubo's natural gift for character design also helps to bring a unique style to each fight: every character has a unique silhouette, whether lanky or stocky or short or tall or somewhere else on that spectrum. And his gift for layout cannot be ignored, either, like the use of white space to help frame a shot in its panel, or the way he lines up panels in parallel—lots of verticals or horizontals in a row—to create a strong visual rhythm few others can duplicate.

If the fight scenes in Bleach are like visual poetry, then the words the characters say to each other are ... actually too poetic, with a lot of loud, theatrical declarations of aggression. Give this translation credit for adding some flair and formality to the script—but then again, embellishments become necessary when the characters are basically saying "I have the power to defeat you!" "No, I have a hidden power that I shall use to defeat you! And here's how it works!" to each other over and over. Meanwhile, the use of original Japanese names for certain attacks (with footnotes in the margins) is a cumbersome technique and would be better replaced by simply using the translated names. Sound effects are edited in a somewhat awkward manner, and readers may find themselves distracted by the big, blocky English letters splayed across various panels to indicate yet another big noise as combatants clash with each other.

With our heroes now well past the no-name grunts at the gates of Hueco Mundo, but still ways off from directly facing the ultimate villain and his generals, this volume of Bleach provides an enjoyable (if not terribly deep) round of mid-level combat. The arrival of Soul Society's captains, and their unique modes of attack, add a much-needed spark of variety—and from a story perspective, they help to keep Ichigo and friends from completely burning out in battle. The overall arc itself still stays on a strictly linear path, though, with the only real development being a cleaning up of all the muddled subplots and multiple battlegrounds at the start of this volume. So stay and enjoy the fights, but don't expect any major plot twists to suddenly pop up—unless you count the surprising ways in which the heroes defeat their foes. Predictable as the triumph of good over evil may be, there's still an element of ingenuity when one does it without ever wielding a sword.

+ Sharp, stylized artwork and outlandish attacks among all the combatants provide plenty of visual entertainment for those who like a good fight.

Coming on the heels of the Bount filler arc, Bleach's sixth set is a blissful twelve-episode return to the main story arc. No enforced character stasis, no side-stories—nothing but advancing plot, shifting character dynamics, and gobs of superpowered action. Of course, this being Bleach and therefore being an enormous shonen cliché, the plot advances in wee little steps, the character dynamics never shift too far, and the action is as predictable as sunrise and sunset. But who cares? Bleach is on the path, moving forward. There are more players to worry about, more conspiracies to look into, more revelations to be revealed, and plenty of hurdles, emotional and physical, to overcome on the way to achieving ever-greater powers.

The first of Bleach's signatures to return, and with a vengeance, is its demented character humor. A return to school means a return to Ichigo's crazed classmates, and they chew the scenery as if famished. Their antics border on the frenzied, and can certainly annoy. But their novel comic chemistry with the new cast more than compensates. Ever wonder what would happen if perverted goofball Keigo met Rangiku's cleavage? You'll find out here. How about what happens when he brings Ikkaku home like a bald, bleeding stray? Or when Orihime-stalking Chizuru spots Hirako flirting with the object of her obsession? How about when Orihime and Rangiku move in together? Or when Rukia tries to live openly with Ichigo's deranged family? The set is infested with new, strange and often uproarious combinations of characters.

Hilarity isn't all that results. The two Visored we see are funny, and typically colorful, but also really scary, and just untrustworthy enough to make their promises of power appropriately Mephistophelian. The mixture is pure Bleach. Where else will you find a character who can one minute be on the verge of ripping through Orihime like talons through tissue and the next be violating her comrade with a quarrelsome finger? Elsewhere a meeting between Ichigo's dad and Kisuke in, shall we say, heightened circumstances drops a bomb on Kon and recasts the Kurosaki household's dynamic in a somewhat unsettling light. Still elsewhere, the reunion of Ishida with his estranged father opens up a fruitful vein of speculation about Ishida's past and Quincy powers.

Everyone gets a goodly nudge forward and their moment to shine. And are the better for it. With a couple of rather conspicuous exceptions. Aizen is given little to do but lounge on his Hueco Mundo throne and look villainous, and Ichigo spends the majority of the set agonizing over his failures and holding himself back for fear of unleashing his inner Hollow. Aizen isn't such a problem; all he has to do is flash his smug smirk and he's done his work—namely making us hate his rotten guts. Emo-Ichi, on the other hand, is a serious detriment. His straight-charging, consequences-be-damned forcefulness has always been Ichigo's greatest asset. Taking that from him may serve a purpose—preparing him for the next power-up, say—but it still strips him of much of his charm.

Ichigo's fights are largely designed to bring out Emo-Ichi, giving him fallen comrades and psychic attacks by his Hollow self to ponder while brooding in the dark. Which means his fights must be at best inconclusive, and at worst outright defeats. Not a lot of fun to be had there. That leaves the supporting cast with a pretty serious amount of action slack to pick up. And they do. As villains go, the Arrancar are on the simplistic side—no moral gray areas here—but they are frightening in their indomitable power and unadulterated viciousness. And their opponents—Chad, Orihime, Ikkaku, Renji, Rangiku, Hitsugaya—are a lot more disposable and on a whole weaker than Ichigo. Put Ichigo in front of a pair of Arrancar? Meh. Have Orihime cross the same pair? Instant agony.

Working from Tite Kubo's manga always gives the action a boost in artistic quality. The fights are better composed, more cogently constructed, and more inventively staged. In the case of Ichigo's fights that can seem something of a waste. The flowing black splash of his finishing attack connecting, the sleek minimalism of his Bankai attire, the displays of inhuman prowess—they're useless in fights that go nowhere. But when the same fluidity is applied to a lesser fight, when the artfully spilled blood and high-impact cross-hatching are employed in support of Renji or Yoruichi, the results are quite different. Then we get such thrilling sights as Yoruichi's acrobatic thrashing of an Arrancar bully, or Ururu unleashing unstoppable brutality in a fugue state. And when everything combines—Kubo's eye for cool, Studio Pierrot's punchy animation, Shiro Sagisu's mariachi contributions to his own guitar-and-dissonance score—during the very expendable Ikkaku's genuine death-match with a volcanic Arrancar...the results can be sublime.

There is little new to say about Viz's dub. The humor has a becoming looseness, intensity is preserved, and no one seriously flubs anything. A sharp-eyed viewer may catch the occasional disparity between a character's dialogue and expression, but only rarely. None of the new additions have been pushed far enough to test how well they'll act in extremis, but they do solid and appropriate work here. Particular kudos to Stephanie Sheh for nailing Orihime's difficult bathside confession to Rangiku.

The gonzo mixture of whacked character humor and gut-puncturing violence, the complicated back-stories, the shadowy organizations, the attenuated angst: this is Bleach the way it's meant to be. Maybe you'll want to kick Ichigo in his mopey, I-can't-protect-my-friends-and-I'm-afraid-my-inner-Hollow-will-consume-me ass, but it's hard to care about that when Keigo's vicious sister is falling for Ikkaku's shiny pate or Rukia is planning to redesign Ichigo's closet for comfort living. Or, more importantly, when Orihime is pouring her conflicted heart out to a shockingly tender Rangiku. It's one of the beauties of Bleach that its characters, honed stereotypes though they are, can still surprise you. And it's a beauty you can only appreciate at times like these, when the filler stops.
